The Winner of the 2013 Glenn Shepard Leadership Award

Congratulations to Steve Halter, who won the 2013 Glenn Shepard Leadership Award.

Steve is president of the Poplar Bluff, Missouri Chamber of Commerce. Though there's not room to include the entire nomination here,  Dr. Devin Stephenson, president of Three Rivers College, summed it up when he wrote:

"Steve exemplifies the leadership talents, collaborative prowess, forward-thinking orientation, and the emotional intelligence skills that are found in an outstanding and effective leader and change agent."

On a personal note, I want all of my readers to know that what began as a simple way to acknowledge excellence in leadership four years ago, has grown into a national competition beyond what I ever imagined.

In 2010, the winner received a gold leadership medal and tickets to a sold out Garth Brooks concert.

In 2011, the winner received the  leadership medal and a new iPad

In 2012, we replaced the medal with a crystal trophy and the iPad with a $1,000 check.

In 2013, we added a Certificate of Recognition for each of the 10 finalists and 50 semi-finalists.

To say that the stories of the people nominated are awe inspiring would be the understatement of the century.

Nominees have included engineers, administrative assistants, police chiefs, educators, doctors, sales professionals, retirees, soldiers, and even a manager in the New York Yankees organization.

As Barry Johnson, president of the Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce put it, “Trying to choose just one winner borders on cruel and unusual punishment”.

For this reason, we enlisted a panel of 19 distinguished leaders like Barry from across the country to serve as judges this year. Their backgrounds ranged from small business owner to a U.S.A.F. Commander of Special Operations, and it was still nearly impossible to choose just one winner.

So congratulations to everyone who was nominated. It is said that you're known by the company you keep, and the company you're in speaks volumes about how extraordinary you all are.

To Your Success,

Glenn Shepard

P.S. Nominations for the 2014 award will open in June.
