Dear Glenn,

I have an employee who always talks loud and butts into any conversion.
We work in a small office and you can hear her on the phone or in her cubical.
Her voice is loud and she laughs all the time. HELP. I don't want to hurt her feelings.

- Carrie in Syracuse, NY

Dear Carrie,

The first requirement of being a good manager is that you must be willing to be unpopular (which also happens to be the first requirement of being a good parent).
You must place a higher priority on being respected than being liked.
You have to have this conversation with her. How you say it is up to you, but how she takes it is up to her.
     Thanks for your question.

The legendary General Douglas MacArthur said:

"A true leader has the confidence to stand alone, the courage to make tough decisions, and the compassion to listen to the needs of others."

Ray Kroc, the man who built McDonald's, said: "The quality of a leader is reflected in the standards they set for themselves."

Former First Lady Rosalynn Carter said: "A leader takes people where they want to go. A great leader takes people where they don't necessarily want to go, but ought to be."

It all sounds so simple, but true leaders are getting harder and harder to find.

For this reason, Glenn Shepard Seminars gives out the Excellence in Leadership Award each year to recognize someone who exhibits the characters of true leadership.

Nominations for this year's award opened yesterday and close on 8/31/16. Here are the criteria:

Briefly explain how your nominee has demonstrated leadership in any or all of the following areas:

1. They don't talk about doing; they actually make things happen.

2. They do what others didnít think was possible.

3. As John Quincy Adams said, they inspire others to dream more, do more, and be more.

4. As Sam Walton said, they go out of their way to boost the self esteem of their team and help them accomplish amazing things.

5. As Dwight D. Eisenhower said, they possess the supreme quality of leadership: Integrity.

If you know someone who deserves this award, click here for instructions on how to nominate them.

Good luck!

To Your Success,

Glenn Shepard

P.S. In addition to the award, the winner will also receive a check for $997.00 to spend any way they choose, as well as international recognition.
